Save Johnston Street!
Save Johnston Street!
Why this petition matters
The Newburgh Ministry is planning a 50-unit transitional house development at 17-19 Johnston Street that will forever alter the fabric of the neighborhood. There is no doubt that we need affordable housing, but this is not the answer!
The project requires MAJOR zoning variances which would be detrimental to the neighborhood's foundation. Developers are looking to build a three-story, 50-unit structure that would occupy up to 56% of the total lot area which is well over the 30% threshold set by city code for this type of structure.
While there are nearly 400 unhoused individuals living in Newburgh, this project WILL NOT necessarily serve those residents. State funding does NOT allow the project to limit housing to local Newburgh individuals BUT anyone based on this criteria.
We must prioritize housing for those IN Newburgh, rather than dumping more individuals into what is already an over-concentrated area of unhoused. A development like this is needed in Newburgh but in a suitable location that doesn’t require substantial alterations of city code.
You can stop this project! We need to demonstrate to the Newburgh Zoning Board of Appeals that we should not significantly alter our regulations to allow for this project.
